If you are trying to decide between a male and a female
here are a few things to think about.

1. Females are more independent than males. If you
want a dog to be in your lap and follow you every where
you go and in your face then you might want a male. If
you just want a loyal friend who likes their own space
then you might want a female. They are not as needy but
will love you the same.

2. It is cheaper to get a male fixed than a female.

3. If you get a male fixed at 5 - 6 mos old (possibly older
if a large breed dog) he will not lift his leg to pee and
mark his territory. Males squat to pee when they are
young and will continue to squat after being fixed.

4. In small breed dogs males are usually cheaper. In
large breed dogs sometimes males cost more than
females but that is a 50/50 chance.  

If you are undecided on which sex you want I would
personally get a male.
